Following the destruction and arson of the Daily Star and Prothom Alo offices amidst national turmoil, another media entity has been targeted.
A group of young individuals allegedly visited the Dhaka headquarters of Global TV Bangladesh, delivering a warning concerning the station’s editorial direction. These individuals reportedly demanded the dismissal of Global TV’s news chief, Naznin Munni, and ominously suggested that the channel would suffer a fate akin to Prothom Alo and The Daily Star if their ultimatum was ignored.
This incident, which took place on December 21st, occurred three days after the assaults on the two newspapers. The unrest that preceded this event was reignited by the passing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a contentious youth figure recognized for his anti-India sentiments.
While the visitors claimed affiliation with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the group has disavowed any connection, with its president stating that the perpetrators do not represent their organization and promising repercussions for those involved.
Naznin Munni, in a social media update, detailed that seven to eight individuals visited Global TV’s Tejgaon office and issued the threat, characterizing the event as an instance of a wider campaign of intimidation aimed at journalists and independent media.
